Owen Mumford announces verified science-based emissions targets and net zero plans
WOODSTOCK, England, November 3, 2021 – Owen Mumford, a worldwide leader in designing, manufacturing, and advancing medical devices, has announced its emissions reduction targets through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The company has set a goal to reach net zero by 2045 (matching the UK NHS target), in line with recommendations from the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Science-based targets help companies figure out how much and how fast they need to cut their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) sets emissions reduction milestones that align with climate science, supporting businesses as they take ambitious climate action in the private sector. Over 2,000 companies worldwide have already committed to these targets.
As part of its sustainability action plan, Owen Mumford has joined the Business Ambition for 1.5°c commitment and is among the first 1,000 companies worldwide to sign up. Launched in 2019, this initiative asks members to pledge to reach net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest, following the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warning that a 1.5°c rise in global temperature will have devastating effects.
By joining this effort, Owen Mumford is also taking part in the Race to Zero campaign, a global collaboration among leaders working to support zero carbon recovery. Owen Mumford recently became one of the first medical device manufacturers in the world to achieve B Corp certification after setting up its sustainability program in 2014 and formally supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To solidify its pledge to reduce the environmental impact of its operations, Owen Mumford has now set a science-based target, using 2015 as its base year. The company will chart a course in 2022 that includes specific milestones to track progress and measure success. The priority will be on Scope 3 emissions, which include things like purchased goods and services, business travel, and waste disposal.
Jarl Severn, CEO at Owen Mumford, said: “Owen Mumford has been pioneering medical devices for decades, and we recognize how important it is to lead when it comes to our environmental impact. Setting a science-based target with the SBTi keeps us accountable and supports us in meeting our 2045 net zero goal. We hope our commitment encourages other businesses to set their own sustainability targets and join the journey toward a carbon-neutral future.”
