Delivering innovation responsibly

Person using medical device

Every day, we push ourselves to fulfill our mission of making a positive difference for our customers, users, employees, and the environment. Sustainability is central to this effort—it’s a core value at the heart of everything we do. It shapes our business strategy and defines our culture as we look ahead.

We take these responsibilities seriously, and this past year has again been marked by bold initiatives across our business. We’re directly addressing climate change with a pledge to cut our carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, reach net-zero by 2045, and pursue science-based targets—all independently validated this year by the SBTi. These transparent, rigorous standards confirm that our efforts are consistent with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, as set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Our journey
Owen mumford recycling plastics

Leading the way in industry change

Global demand for pen injectors is set to reach 10 billion units a year by 2030, producing 3 million tons of CO2e. Emissions mainly come from material sourcing, manufacturing, and disposal—and with limited recycling, single-use medical plastics create major sustainability issues. The healthcare sector’s “use and toss” approach stands in the way of net-zero objectives.

Our 2030 sustainability goals

We've set the following 2030 sustainability targets that support our core business principles.

Grow our positive global impact by rolling out innovative, safe products at the heart of our business to lessen environmental effects overall.

Sustainability at our Witney facility

Before opening our new Witney site, we set an ambitious target to earn BREEAM certification, a leading benchmark in environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Thanks to the hard work of our team and partners, we’ve been certified at the “Very Good” level, proving our commitment to responsible building practices that conserve resources and boost our employees’ well-being.

Some sustainability highlights: we’ve diverted 97% of construction waste from landfills, use 100% renewable energy, installed solar panels that produced 21,000 kWh last year, offer EV charging, and support local biodiversity efforts. This certification is a key milestone as we continue our sustainability journey.

Responsible Action Report

Owen Mumford is one of the first companies in the medical device industry worldwide to achieve B Corp certification, and we’ve set science-based targets to reach net zero by 2045 as part of our long-standing, ever-evolving sustainability focus. In this year’s report, we want to look at how the medical device industry can review—and maybe rethink—how it manufactures products and conducts business.

Our hope is to inspire others in our field to create their own real action plans and work toward a safer, more sustainable future for all.
