Owen Mumford has set its emissions reduction goals using the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company’s aim is to reach net zero by 2045, matching the UK NHS target and in line with the guidance of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

With science-based targets, organizations can figure out how much and how fast they need to cut their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to avoid the worst outcomes of climate change. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) provides science-based emissions reduction targets that support companies in the private sector as they drive ambitious climate action. More than 2,000 companies globally have already established their targets.

As a part of its sustainability plan, Owen Mumford has joined the Business Ambition for 1.5°c pledge and is among the first 1,000 companies worldwide to sign on. This initiative, launched in 2019, invites members to commit to reaching net zero emissions by no later than 2050 after a United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warning that a 1.5°c increase in global temperatures would be catastrophic.

By signing this commitment, Owen Mumford is also joining the Race to Zero, a worldwide collaboration to help achieve zero-carbon recovery. Recently, Owen Mumford became one of the first medical device makers globally to earn B Corp certification, following the launch of its sustainability program in 2014 and a formal commitment to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To confirm its promise to reduce its environmental footprint, Owen Mumford has now set a science-based target using 2015 as its base year. The company will lay out a roadmap in 2022, with key milestones to track progress and evaluate success. Particular attention will be paid to Scope 3 emissions, such as those from purchased goods and services, business trips, and waste handling.

Jarl Severn, CEO of Owen Mumford, said: “Owen Mumford has been a medical device innovator for decades, and we know the value of leading by example regarding our environmental impact and business operations. Defining a science-based target through the SBTi keeps us accountable and supports our net zero goal for 2045. We hope our commitment motivates other businesses to establish their own sustainability targets and work toward a carbon-neutral future.”
