Oxford, UK – 10:00am (GMT) April 21st, 2017: Owen Mumford has been named a winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, Innovation 2017 – which is the highest honor for business success in the UK. The Innovation Award recognizes organizations that have demonstrated exceptional and/or ongoing commercial achievement over several years. Winners are selected by the Queen, based on advice from the former Prime Minister, David Cameron. The winners were announced today, on the Queen’s birthday, April 21, 2017.
Owen Mumford received the award for ‘Innovation’ as recognition for the company’s medical device design and manufacturing advances that help enhance quality of life, support treatment adherence, and lower healthcare costs. Making a world of difference for people across the globe.
With 65 years of pioneering medical devices, Owen Mumford delivers innovations from diagnostic sampling to drug delivery, using a wide range of proven self-injection and blood sampling platforms and intellectual property.
Owen Mumford’s extensive expertise in research, design, and manufacturing produces top-tier medical devices used by people all over the world – with more than 85% of their products exported to over 60 countries. They are dedicated to introducing life-saving and life-changing devices to new markets worldwide.

The award recognized Owen Mumford’s progress in injection pen needles, and specifically UnifinePentipsPlus. The global rise in diabetes has driven a similar increase in demand for pen devices with injection needles. Even though pen needles are recommended for single use, it’s challenging to ensure patients actually follow best practices, and removing and disposing of pen needles easily is a major obstacle to compliance. The all-in-one pen needle is an innovative device with two chambers — one for a new needle, and another chamber for safe, interim disposal of used needles. This allows users to easily attach a new needle and responsibly dispose of the old one. After developing the product, Owen Mumford ran a user evaluation study and found a 61% increase in patients using a new pen needle for each injection, compared to their previous habits using standard pen needles¹. On the business side, sales of this device have grown by 52% in the last two years.
“Receiving our Queen’s Award for ‘Innovation’ is incredibly rewarding, as it highlights that everything we do at Owen Mumford is about making a World of Difference. Our goal is to improve lives, encourage patients to stick with treatment, and help reduce healthcare costs. The Innovation Award honors organizations that have achieved exceptional or ongoing commercial success over many years, and we’re thrilled that our 65-year record of breakthrough device solutions has been recognized by the former Prime Minister and the Queen,” said Jarl Severn, Managing Director at Owen Mumford.
“I’d like to take this chance to thank all our associates who’ve helped contribute to our innovative products and our customers for their continued support, business, and loyalty,” added Jarl.
