Inconsistent supplier emissions data is a challenge for many businesses when reducing scope 3 emissions. We are working to address this challenge by asking suppliers to use a consistent methodology when measuring and reporting their emissions.

We also conduct lifecycle assessments to inform where our emission hotspots are in our supply chain. This helps us to reduce these emissions by design, be it physical, material or systemic.

UN Global Compact Network UK: 
Reducing scope 3 emissions

We are proud to announce that we are sponsoring a series of UN Global Compact webinars focusing on reducing scope 3 emissions.

The series of webinars will explore how companies can reduce their scope 3 emissions, helping businesses to credibly measure, report and reduce these emissions while incorporating it into their net-zero strategy, and identify practical steps for engaging stakeholders within a value chain to accelerate the reduction of a business’ scope 3 emissions.

Guest speakers will include climate experts and representatives from companies that have already started on their journeys and can share their experiences.

As a UN Global Compact Network UK member, we support this event by helping businesses, government and society to progress while educating ourselves throughout the series.

Reducing our emissions

Through our environmental steering group, we have achieved many accolades to date. A key milestone in our sustainability journey was becoming one of the first in the industry to achieve B Corp status – an external validation that we are doing precisely what we say we will do. However, we recognise that there is much more to work towards.

  • Emissions reporting: Improving the integrity and accessibility of our emissions reporting is a vital part of our sustainability strategy. Our goal is to develop a dynamic data model that will allow us to link improvements we’re making across the organisation to product-level emissions. This model will make our data actionable, highlight product-level impact and unite teams in their sustainability efforts.

  • Building for the future: Our brand-new Witney site achieved a “Very Good” BREEAM certification, demonstrating its exceptional levels of environmental, social and economic sustainability performance, not only protecting natural resources but enhancing the wellbeing of associates located there. To achieve this status, we had to consider a multitude of different aspects in the facility’s construction, from sustainably focused planning to the final realisation of a responsible workspace that promotes productivity and welfare.

  • Reforestation projects: In partnership with the Eden Reforestation Projects, we planted 468 trees this year in response to the number of completed engagement survey submissions. Each tree planted through this scheme not only reduces carbon, but also provides employment for impoverished people in these areas.

  • Consolidating shipments: We are dedicated to continually enhancing our global and local transport networks. As part of this commitment, we have introduced a dedicated consolidation service in China. Moving forward, when we have volumes aligned to LCL (less-than-container load) across multiple suppliers, we will transport them locally to Shanghai for consolidation. Not only has this meant a reduction in lead times and cost, but has also cut CO2 emissions by 500kg per container.

  • Going paperless: We are committed to significantly reducing paper consumption throughout the business. Our finance team has already transitioned to a paperless approach, and we are actively expanding this initiative across all teams. Additionally, our quality department has implemented electronic signatures, greatly reducing our reliance on paper-based processes. This shift is expected to save approximately 7,756 sheets of paper annually, equivalent to preserving 1.5-2 trees, conserving over 77,500 litres of water, and avoiding around 56kg of CO2 emissions.

  • Utilising renewable energy: Our French office received an A grade from the Indice Vert (Green Index), a rating system that evaluates companies on their environmental and social responsibility practices, particularly in relation to sustainable procurement, ethical business practices and CSR. Receiving an A grade indicates Owen Mumford has met or exceeded the required standards for responsible purchasing and sustainability within the French healthcare sector.

Having already committed to the UN Global Compact Sustainable Development Goals, we are extremely proud to demonstrate that we are doing what we say we will do – by becoming one of the first in our industry to achieve B Corp status.
