Delivering innovation in an accountable way

Person using medical device

Every day, we challenge ourselves to live our mission to make a positive difference to our customers, users, associates and the environment. This is powered by a core pillar embedded at the heart of everything we do – sustainability. It influences our business strategy and defines our culture as we look towards the future.

We take our responsibilities seriously – and have once again had a year marked by bold initiatives within our business space. We’re tackling climate change head on, committing to a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, achieving a net-zero carbon footprint by 2045 and working towards science-based targets – all independently validated this year by the SBTi. These transparent and rigorous frameworks confirm our alignment with a trajectory aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5°C, in accordance with the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Our story

Inspiring industry-wide change

Global demand for pen injectors is expected to hit ten billion units a year by 2030, generating three million tonnes of CO2e. With emissions mainly from material extraction, manufacturing and disposal – and limited recycling options – single-use medical plastics pose a major sustainability challenge. The healthcare sector’s “use and discard” model hinders progress toward net-zero goals.

Our 2030 sustainability targets

We have identified the following 2030 sustainability targets that address our core business principles.

Expand our positive impact globally by introducing innovative and safe core-business products that reduce overall environmental impact.

Sustainability at our Witney site

Before opening our new Witney facility, we set an ambitious goal to achieve BREEAM certification, a leading standard in environmental, social and economic sustainability. Thanks to the dedication of our team and partners, the site is now certified at the “Very Good” level, reflecting our commitment to responsible building practices that protect natural resources and enhance the wellbeing of our associates.

Key sustainability highlights include diverting 97% of construction waste from landfill, using 100% renewable energy, installing solar panels that generated 21,000kWh last year, providing EV charging points, and supporting local biodiversity projects. This certification marks an important milestone in our ongoing sustainability journey.

Investing in the future

Responsible Action Report

Owen Mumford is one of the first medical device companies in the world to achieve B Corp certification and has set science-based targets to achieve net zero by 2045, as part of its long-established and continually evolving sustainability agenda. In this year’s report, we want to go through how the medical device industry can review and maybe rethink how its products are made, and how business is carried out.

We hope to inspire other companies in our sector to implement their own real action plan and work towards the goal of safe and sustainable future for everyone.
