United Nation’s International Youth Day - Tyler Koch
The 12th of August marks United Nation’s International Youth Day, a special event which commemorates the talent and creativity of the next generation, whilst also spreading awareness about engaging and encouraging the participation of upcoming generations in important initiatives. This year, that focus is on promoting the importance of green skills for the youth. The shift towards an environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly world is critical not only for responding to the global climate crisis but also for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As a proud member of the United Nation’s Global Compact, we are fully committed to and in support of our five chosen Sustainable Development Goals which we believe enable us to make the biggest difference. We recognise that in order to work towards our commitments to these goals, we need the continued support of the next generation and that is why we invest so heavily in our internship and apprenticeship programs. Recently we caught up with our Digital Communications Intern, Tyler Koch, to find out more about his time in the company and what sustainability means to him.
Tyler:
Where does your internship role sit within the wider organisation of Owen Mumford?
My role as a Digital Communications Intern is embedded within the Group Communications team under the guidance of Edward Gottfried, the Digital Communications Manager. My responsibilities and projects cut across various sectors of the organisation, influencing not only our corporate social channel but also shaping the company's image and connection with the medical devices industry.
What’s been the most valuable lesson you’ve learnt here at Owen Mumford?
The most valuable lesson I've learnt is the importance of collaboration and diversity in a global business setting. The opportunity to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds has enriched my perspective on business practices and cultural nuances. This exposure has expanded my understanding of how a successful global business operates.
Reflecting on your internship, what skills or knowledge have you acquired or developed that you believe will be valuable in your future career?
Most notably I have honed my digital communication skills, including web design, analytics, SEO optimization, CRM campaigns, and e-commerce. These technical skills, paired with my improved interpersonal and networking abilities, are valuable assets that I will carry forward in my career. Digital marketing is a key skill in today’s environment and I’m so pleased to have been able to refine these skills further in my internship.
How important is it that companies futureproof their business with forward-thinking, innovative, young employees?
Innovation and adaptability are key to a business's longevity. Young, innovative minds bring fresh perspectives, creativity, and a keen understanding of modern technology and social trends. Their contributions can catalyse growth and adaptability in an ever-evolving market landscape. Due to the nature of my role being entrenched within the social media landscape, there is an emphasised need for young employees who understand the complex aspects of social media.
In what ways did sustainability play a role in your time at Owen Mumford?
Sustainability has been integral in shaping my role at Owen Mumford. It informed the content I created, driving me to promote sustainable practices and create impactful messages that resonated with our audience and aligned with the company's green initiatives. From the company’s B Corp certification and its support of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals all the way down to localised green initiatives on the company’s front door, sustainability plays a central role in the corporate communications here at Owen Mumford.
How do you envisage sustainability playing a more central role in the business world of the future?
I foresee sustainability becoming an inextricable part of business strategy and operations, influencing decision-making, product development, and marketing. Businesses will likely place more emphasis on reducing their carbon footprint, promoting sustainable practices, and aligning their brands with green initiatives to cater to an increasingly environmentally conscious market.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about applying for an internship?
Approach internships with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Embrace the opportunity to broaden your network and gain insights from experienced professionals. Don't shy away from challenges; they are growth opportunities. And remember, your contributions as an intern are valuable and can influence a company's trajectory in a number of ways.
