Owen Mumford publishes annual Responsible Action Report

February 2023

As a global business and significant local employer, we acknowledge our responsibilities to our people and the planet and with this in mind we are part of the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, The United Nations Global Compact. We align our responsible business strategies and operations with the initiative’s universal principles on human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption, ensuring we keep to the highest of standards. To maintain our continuous improvement on these standards, every year we publish our Responsible Action Report to highlight our achievements and continue alignment with our Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This year our latest report details some exciting moments in our sustainability journey, with the development of our new state-of-the-art facility in Witney, Oxfordshire particularly standing out. We are committed to evolving our infrastructure and facilities to improve efficiency and reduce our environmental impact, and our Witney site is set to expand on this pledge. Nearing completion, the building is set to be included in the top 25% of buildings assessed through the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). The BREEAM certification recognises the highest levels of environmental, social, and economic sustainability performance, not only protecting natural resources but enhancing the well-being of associates who will be located there.

Sustainability continues to be a key area of focus for us across our existing facilities as well, and through commitment to our chosen SDGs we have generated 134,280kW hours of clean energy through our UK solar panels, saved 8,536kg of CO2 by optimising our logistics network, and decreased our global energy usage by 8.4% from the last year whilst increasing productivity. These achievements amongst many others in the report show our dedication to helping improve the environment.

We also understand the responsibility we have in supporting the well-being of our associates, as well as monitoring and improving policies to promote gender equality across our global network. Having a healthy work-life balance is important and we have a policy in place so that our associates can extend their holiday allowance and purchase up to 10 days of additional holiday each year and sell it back if plans change. Additionally, we uphold a high standard of health and safety initiatives across all sites to protect our associates. For the second consecutive year, we have received the RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Gold Health and Safety Award for our commitment to exceptional risk control and low levels of error, harm, and loss. As a key player in the engineering space, we also make continued investment in promoting women into STEM subjects.

Every department in Owen Mumford plays an active role in making progress with our sustainability commitments, and our ongoing continuous improvement work will see us achieve even more in the coming months.
