August 12 is United Nation’s International Youth Day, a special occasion that highlights the talent and creativity of the next generation while raising awareness about involving and empowering youth to participate in important initiatives. This year, we’re focusing on supporting the development of green skills for young people. Moving toward an environmentally friendly, climate-conscious world is crucial for responding to the global climate crisis as well as for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As an active participant in the United Nation’s Global Compact, we’re deeply committed to our five chosen Sustainable Development Goals, which we believe give us the greatest opportunity to make a difference. We know that fulfilling our commitments to these goals depends on support from the next generation, which is why we invest heavily in our internship and apprenticeship programs. Recently, we spoke with our Digital Communications Intern, Tyler Koch, to learn more about his experience at the company and what sustainability means to him.
Tyler:
Where does your internship fit within the overall structure of Owen Mumford?
As a Digital Communications Intern, I’m part of the Group Communications team, reporting to Edward Gottfried, the Digital Communications Manager. My work and projects span different parts of the company, impacting not only our social media presence but also helping to shape our company’s brand and connections in the medical devices field.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned at Owen Mumford?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is the value of collaboration and diversity in a global business environment. Having the chance to work with people from many different backgrounds has helped me see business and cultural differences in new ways. This insight has given me a deeper understanding of how successful global companies operate.
Looking back on your internship, what skills or knowledge have you gained that you think will help you in your future career?
Most importantly, I’ve sharpened my digital communications abilities, like web design, analytics, SEO, CRM campaigns, and e-commerce. These technical skills, combined with stronger interpersonal and networking abilities, are valuable for my professional growth. Digital marketing is a key area today, and I’m very glad I was able to build these skills during my internship.
Why is it important for companies to plan for the future by hiring young, forward-thinking, and innovative employees?
Being innovative and prepared for change is essential for a company’s success over time. Young employees bring new ideas, creativity, and a clear sense of current technologies and trends. Their input can help businesses grow and respond to a fast-changing world. Because my role is so connected to social media, it’s especially important to have younger staff who truly understand the digital landscape.
How did sustainability factor into your time at Owen Mumford?
Sustainability was a guiding principle in my experience at Owen Mumford. It shaped the content I developed, motivating me to communicate sustainable practices and create meaningful messages that connected with our audience and fit with the company’s green goals. From the company’s B Corp certification and UN Sustainable Development Goals support, to local eco-friendly initiatives at our own offices, sustainability is central to Owen Mumford’s corporate communications.
How do you see sustainability becoming even more important in the business world going forward?
I believe sustainability will become a core part of business strategies and everyday operations, affecting everything from decision-making to products and marketing. Companies will likely work even harder to lower their carbon footprint, promote eco-friendly choices, and associate their brands with sustainability to meet the needs of customers who care about the environment.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for an internship?
Go into your internship with curiosity and a desire to learn. Take advantage of the chance to connect with new people and learn from experienced professionals. Don’t be afraid to face challenges – they help you grow. And keep in mind, your work as an intern matters and can make a real impact on a company’s future.
