Avoiding pre-analytic errors

Avoiding pre-analytic errors

How to avoid errors when collecting capillary blood samples

  • Before puncture1, clean the site with alcohol and let it air dry to prevent hemolysis of the sample; do not wipe it dry
  • After puncture, use clean gauze to wipe away the first drop of blood to prevent diluting the sample with interstitial fluid1,2
  • Touch the collection device to the second drop of blood and allow the blood to flow into the collection tube via capillary action, using a gentle squeeze and release technique to ensure steady blood flow and prevent hemolysis or unwanted clots in the sample2
  • Do not squeeze the finger excessively or use a scraping or scooping motion when collecting the blood to help prevent hemolysis and dilution with interstitial fluid1,2
  • EXPERT TIP:

Optimizing collection technique minimizes the risk of inaccurate results.
