The Operations Technical and Development Group work with both product and process from concept through to long term manufacture. Our diverse and dedicated teams of Engineers bring manufacturing and process experience and expertise throughout the product life cycle to ensure innovation, best practice, and continual improvement across our manufacturing network.

From early Design for Manufacture, through to Tooling, Assembly, Test and Measurement , from single cavity up to high speed multicavity tooling, from simple hand assembly to fully automated high speed assembly, and from simple manual measurement to fully automated systems, the OTD team cover all engineering specialities in house to provide an end to end manufacturing solution.

Tooling

Our tooling team are responsible for the design, procurement, commissioning, engineering and validation of mould tooling and ancillary equipment.  They engage with the Owen Mumford Design team from the early stages of the device design process contributing to Design for Manufacture reviews and therefore ensuring a smooth transfer of the manufacturing process into the Operations Group.

We have knowledge of validating tooling from micro to multi cavity high precision equipment. We work with a worldwide network of toolmakers to support our customers’ requirements.

Our integrated approach to the introduction of new tooling involves full process optimisation, validation risk assessments, Design of Experiments and metrology measurements that allow us to use statistical results to achieve a repeatable and robust process which is critical in achieving our finished products.

Test Method & Metrology

Our Test Method and Metrology team are responsible for developing and implementing any measurement of a test system. This data is needed by manufacturing to validate and control  monitor moulded components and fully assembled or sub-assembly devices in production

The team have an in-depth knowledge of statistical techniques required for validating new manufacturing processes and equipment, and analysing IPC (in process control). To enable batch release they complete functional and visual checks of assembled products prior to them being released to the customer. They also support continuous improvement activities to improve manufacturing efficiency.

Manufacturing Equipment Group (MEG)

Our Manufacturing Equipment Group (MEG) bridges the gap between R&D and Production. Working closely with R&D during the product design phase they ensure that components are designed to make the assembly process simpler and more robust. Later in the product development they specify the equipment required for commercial production of devices. This equipment can range from simple tabletop guides, fixtures or jigs for manual processes through to fully automated assembly equipment with built in quality controls. During the equipment design and build phase MEG works with suppliers to ensure the equipment is reliable and robust and ready for validation when it reaches OM sites.

With equipment on site, MEG will validate the assembly process and equipment. During this time, they also liaise with multiple departments to ensure that there is a production process in place to take components from Goods Inwards or internal manufacturing processes through the assembly and packing processes to despatch, including in process or batch release testing.

At the end of the validation process MEG supports the transition into full commercial production, ensuring a smooth start to a new product’s launch onto market.
