Our History
In 1952 Ivan Owen and John Mumford established a new business in a small lock-up garage owned by Ivan’s father. Six decades later Owen Mumford is an industry leader in the medical device market with offices, manufacturing sites and a network of distributors around the globe. The business remains family owned to this day.
1950's

In 1952, Ivan Owen and John Mumford founded a company and began manufacturing medical equipment and hospital furniture.
Their first product was an improved version of the Macintosh Laryngoscope, closely followed by the Oxford Inflating Bellows, Radcliffe Humidifier and accessories for these products. Manufacture of aluminium moulds for the local plastic injection moulding industry also became part of their precision engineering activities.
1960's

By the 1960's, the company was operating from an old glove factory premises in Oxford Street, Woodstock, purchased in 1958.
The company continued to manufacture anaesthesia equipment but had also progressed into injection moulding as a trade moulder for a wide variety of products. By the end of the decade, Owen Mumford was also heavily involved as a contract moulder for the automotive industry.

1970's
In 1971, the contract moulding activities had outgrown the Oxford Street premises and a new factory was built for the 'Plastics Division' in Tipping Meadow, Brook Hill, Woodstock. The medical products continued to be manufactured at Oxford Street.
In 1977, a chance conversation led to Owen Mumford's involvement in the development of a device to help people with diabetes take capillary blood samples. In March 1978, the Autolet®, the world's first automatic lancing device, was launched and soon became a major factor in the growth of blood glucose monitoring worldwide.

1980's

The success of Autolet® soon led to a great demand for lancets, which could not be met by the existing manufacturer. In 1982, Owen Mumford entered the disposables market and a cleanroom, manufacturing Unilet® lancets was commissioned in premises in Hensington Road, Woodstock.
By 1987, Owen Mumford's involvement with diabetes care led to the introduction of several more groundbreaking devices to assist with the management of the condition. In addition to Autolet® and Unilet®, Owen Mumford had launched the Autoinjector™ and the Accupen® insulin delivery pen.
1990's
In the 1990's, sales continued to grow rapidly with the addition of major new products including Autopen® and the Unistik® range.
OEM contracts with world leading pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies were obtained for insulin pens, auto injectors and lancing devices. In 1992, a new factory at Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, was built and the company ceased all trade moulding activities to concentrate exclusively on the growing potential for medical devices for a wide range of medical conditions.

2000

In 2002 Owen Mumford celebrated its 50th anniversary as a manufacturer of specialist medical devices.
Our mission continues to be to design, develop and manufacture small medical devices for hospital, primary and home healthcare.
